Obituary of John Bert Shaw

John Bert Shaw, formerly of Holmdel, N.J. passed away peacefully at home July 24, 2021. He was born in Newark, N.J. and raised in Laurence Harbor, N.J. He graduated as Senior Class President (1957) from Sayreville High School. He had a B.A from Monmouth College and a Masters Degree from Montclair State College. He was a dedicated English teacher who spent the majority of his career at Matawan Regional High School. He loved teaching and all his students. He left for school each morning with a big smile on his face and returned home with a pile of papers— looking forward to seeing what they had written. After “retirement”, he taught seven years in Izmir Turkey, Madrid Spain and Damascus Syria. Then he spent several years as an Adjunct Professor at North Hampton Community College in the Poconos. He enjoyed retirement as a snowbird—wintering in Pine Lakes C.C. in N. Fort Myers, Florida where he was an enthusiastic member of both the Softball and Tennis Teams. He won a Tennis Tournament (in his age group) just days before he was diagnosed with Glioma Blastoma the same fatal brain cancer that killed Ted Kennedy and John McCain. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert Shaw and Evelyn (Langhans) Shaw. Surviving John are his devoted wife of 58 years,Paulette (Stanish) Shaw, beloved sons, Jeffrey Shaw (Ocean Township) and Michael Shaw( Washburn, Maine) daughter-in-law Attiin) and four precious grandsons, Zakiy, Zorion, Zeth, and Zain. Also survived by cousin, Dr. Lesley Shaw (wife Mary) of Audubon, Pennsylvania, and by Paulette’s siblings, Jean Stanish Stulack, Norene Stanish Kaplan, and Brian Stanish. Special thanks to the Fand Family, especially his dearest friend and colleague, Farrell Fand, who shared the best moments and milestones of his life.
