Obituary of Sonja Jernstedt

Sonja Jernstedt, 61, of Toms River, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 25th, 2019 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick, following a short battle with lung cancer. Born in Neptune at Jersey Shore Medical Center, she was a longtime resident of the Toms River area. Ms. Jernstedt worked in customer care for most of her life and was recently retired.

Ms. Jernstedt was tirelessly devoted to her family; her greatest joy was to see them laugh and smile. She gave of herself freely, no matter the circumstances or person in need. Blessed with many titles, she especially loved two of them: “Mom” and “Nan.”

Predeceased by her parents, Walter and Naomi Jernstedt; a grandchild, Brianna Crawford; and her youngest sibling, Nelson Jernstedt. Ms. Jernstedt is survived by her two loving sons, Matthew Jernstedt of Tempe, Arizona and David Crawford of Brick, New Jersey, and his spouse, Mercy Crawford; two elder siblings, Walter “Eddie” Jernstedt II of South Toms River, New Jersey and Lynda Hendrell of Tucson, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Catherine Jernstedt; one grandchild, Brittney Crawford, also of Brick; and multiple nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

A small service for Ms. Jernstedt’s relatives and closest friends will be held on January 26th at Pine Lake Park Clubhouse. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who knew Sonja donate to the Epilepsy Foundation of America in the name of her beloved granddaughter Brianna.
