Obituary of Elizabeth R. Marino, M.D.
Please share a memory of Elizabeth to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On Monday, August 1, 2016, Elizabeth (Liz) R. Marino, M.D., FAAP, FSAM, age 54, of Barnegat, NJ, succumbed to metastatic breast cancer. She is survived by her loving husband, Doug Harper, her dog, Darwin, and her cat, Merlin. All of whom will be lost without her.
She is also survived by her brothers and their spouses, Marcus (Ellen), Daniel and Matthew (Staci) Marino. Her parents in law Jerry and Susanne Harper. Her sisters in law and their spouses, Julia (Paul Fox) Harper and Donna Sue (Scott) Dowton. Her nieces and nephews Mason, Madison and Taylor Marino, Ashley and Julia Dowton. She is predeceased by her parents Elias and Daisy and her brother David Marino.
Liz was born in Bronx, NY and was raised in Staten Island, NY. After graduating from NYU, Liz joined the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Captain. In 1987 Liz graduated from Medical School-NYU to become Elizabeth R. Marino, M.D. She moved to New Jersey in 1990 where she practiced Adolescent Medicine for 22 years in Newark, NJ. She was loved by many of her patients, became a 'sort of' mother to them and helped guide them to better health and better lives.
Liz loved sewing, reading and art. She remained an active painter throughout her life. Liz and her husband retired early and she lived the rest of her life at the New Jersey Shore where she enjoyed growing herbs in the raised gardens her husband built for her and boating on Barnegat Bay. A serious fan of science fiction Liz always wanted to travel to outer space, her Klingon name was “KayLiz”. Doug and Liz are both registered as passengers on the InSight Mars mission, scheduled to land on Nov 18. 2018, where they will stay together forever.
Liz was also active in her community. She was a member of the Barnegat ADA Comittee, was a member of Bethlehem Chapter Order of Eastern Star and belonged to the Red Hat dining club.
Liz’s final arrangements will be private. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 20th at her home in Barnegat, NJ where a collection of her art will be available for viewing. In lieu of flowers Liz requests donations be made in her name, “Elizabeth R. Marino M.D.” to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
