Tips for Explaining Death to Children

When a family member passes away, adults find it very difficult to explain the situation to children. Most adults believe that they do not need to discuss this topic with kids in the house. However, it is essential to have a conversation with your children even though it can be a little difficult to do so. Here are 5 tips that can help:

1. It can be a little tempting to speak of death in passing and many people tend to skirt the topic. It is far better to be straightforward and honest with the child and tell them exactly what has happened.

2. It is also very important that you do not scare the child in any way while talking about death. They should understand that death is a part of life and that it isn't something to fear.

3. Children may have to deal with these kinds of events in various forms and it is a good idea to use those opportunities to get more familiar with the concept. For example, if a tree or shrub in your garden has died or even when a pet passes away, you should take the opportunity to explain the concept of death to your child. This makes it easier for you to discuss the topic in case there is a death in the family.

4. It is not necessary to elaborate and discuss philosophical concepts with the child when you are explaining the concept of death. Keep the explanation simple and tell the child that the deceased person will not be coming back and that they have stopped breathing.

5. It is best to use straightforward terms rather than vague ones. The latter can give the child and idea that death is temporary, and this is something you don't want them to believe. It is essential that your child have clarity about the concept of death and exactly what it means.
