With social media being an increasing part of our lives, it is important to understand the key role it can play in planning a funeral service or dealing with a loved one’s passing. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of social media and funerals in this modern age.

Social Media - Pros

Various Connections

You may be able to contact those who have lost touch as well as having a network of people who know other people and can let them know about the passing.

It’s Quick

With one post you can inform hundreds of people that the deceased has passed which makes it less stressful and saves a lot of time.

Memorialization

Many social media platforms such as Facebook allow you to memorialize an account, meaning that it won’t be logged into but others can still post which can be a sweet gesture for a loved one. Particularly at the anniversary of their death when friends and family can look back on memories and make new posts.

Social Media - Cons

A Disconnected Feeling

For many, finding out online can mean that it doesn’t feel real and this makes accepting it much more difficult because of the disconnect that can be apparent between reality and online lives.

It Might Hurt Family

Family may accidentally find out via social media that a loved one has passed and this can not only be painful but cause animosity between people, making the grieving process worst.

Some feel that social media has no place at a funeral and that you should be present to celebrate life so make sure that you understand a few of these etiquette rules surrounding social media and funerals:

Avoid photos with the deceased or those, which show you acting inappropriately in a funeral setting e.g. being smiley or outlandish.

Consider if the family want the service broadcasted first as it may be a closed service and not want it on social media – if in doubt, ask
