How To Decide On Cremation Or Burial

Whether you are looking to the future and pre-planning your funeral or your loved one has passed and you are unsure on which option to pick, a cremation or burial are the traditional choices. It can be difficult to decide what you want and there are a lot of things to consider, here are a few points to note to help you decide:

The key difference between burial and cremation is how the body ends up, meaning that during cremation, the remains are incinerated and turn to ashes, which can be sprinkled, scattered or kept depending on preference. On the other hand, a burial involves either being entombed in a crypt or mausoleum or buried in the ground.

The Cost Difference between Cremation & Burial

Finances can play a huge role in funeral planning and generally speaking, a cremation is cheaper and uses fewer resources than a burial. In part, this is because you avoid plot or land fees and usually don’t need an elaborate casket which significantly reduces the price.

The Religious Views between Cremation & Burial

In some religions, cremation is frowned upon or forbidden for example with Judaism Greek Orthodox or Muslims, while in others it is actively encouraged for example Buddhism. Depending on the deceased’s religion or those of the surviving loved ones, religious views may make the decision for you.

What are your Personal Preferences?

Some feel that a solid resting place that comes with burial gives them more comfort and a “tie” to their loved ones by visiting a certain place and feeling as though they are there because that is where their deceased’s body is resting. On the other hand, ashes can be turned into jewellery, keepsakes or kept in an urn so for those who travel or live far away, a cremation is preferred.

The Deceased Request

It is always important to respect the wishes of the deceased and if they have made a preference known, even if not formally in a will, you should respect this, even if it conflicts your own views. It is a show of respect and is their last wish.
