Cremation: The Advantages and Disadvantages

Many families choose cremation as an option for their loved one, while others opt for a burial. To help you make the decision we have put together the advantages and disadvantages of cremation to give you a better picture of your options and help you decide.

Advantages Of Cremation

It’s Cheaper – Predominantly because there are no land or plot fees but also because you can opt for wicker caskets or those which are unadorned unlike a burial.

Flexible Services – For those with loved ones around the world, getting to a funeral on short notice can be difficult and burials need to be performed within a certain amount of time, meaning some might miss it. With cremation however, services are more flexible and can be held on a date to suit you and your family.

Mobility – With the ability to keep the ashes in an urn or scatter them at your loved one’s request, cremation can be viable if you don’t want a marked resting place. Many families decide to keep their deceased with them at home and whenever they move they seek comfort in the fact their loved ones are with them.

Easy Memorializing – Ashes can be turned into keepsakes and jewelery, which makes it easier to memorialise.

Disadvantages Of Cremation

Religious Considerations – Quite simply, some religions and beliefs forbid or highly dislike cremation as a practice, some examples of this are; Judaism, Muslims or Greek Orthodox.

Pollution – If you or your loved ones are highly eco-friendly then it is important to consider the C02 emissions that are released during the cremation process and this can be a negative aspect for some.

No Fixed Place – Unlike burial, there is no “official” resting place for the deceased and some find this difficult during the grieving process (although some people find this more flexible and relaxing) so this point is down to personal preference.

Hopefully this will give you some more insight into cremation and help you make an informed decision. For more information on cremation and your options, visit our website or contact one of our friendly members of staff who can assist you.
