Memorials are physical reminders of significant events, individuals, or historical moments. We at Ocean County Cremation Service know they provide a place for reflection, remembrance, and commemoration.

Different Types of Unique Memorials From Around The World

While many memorials take the form of statues, plaques, or monuments, there are different types of unique memorials from around the world, and here we look at some of them.

The Wave Organ, United States

The Wave Organ is an interactive acoustic sculpture in San Francisco, California. It consists of a series of pipes that interact with the ocean's waves, creating unique sounds. Visitors can listen to the music produced by the waves and find solace in the harmonious blend of nature and art.

The Children's Peace Monument, Japan

Located in Hiroshima, Japan, the Children's Peace Monument is dedicated to Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who died from leukemia caused by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The monument features a statue of Sadako holding a paper crane, symbolizing her wish for peace. Visitors often fold paper cranes as a tribute to Sadako and a gesture of hope for a peaceful world.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial, United States

Located in Washington, D.C., the Korean War Veterans Memorial honors those who served in the Korean War. The memorial features a wall with engraved images of soldiers and a reflecting pool, creating a solemn atmosphere. What makes this memorial unique is the addition of 19 statues of soldiers from different branches of the military, representing the diverse participants in the war.

The Sinking Library, Egypt

The Sinking Library in Alexandria, Egypt, pays homage to the Library of Alexandria, one of the most renowned libraries in ancient history. The memorial consists of a semi-submerged circular bookshelf structure, symbolizing the sinking of knowledge and the destruction of the original library. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting cultural heritage.

The Whispering Wall, Australia

Located in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, the Whispering Wall is a dam that has an unusual acoustic property. It allows whispers to be heard clearly from one end to the other, a distance of over 100 meters. Visitors often leave messages for loved ones or communicate across the dam using only whispers, creating a unique and intimate form of remembrance.

These different types of unique memorials from around the world demonstrate the diverse and creative ways people memorialize and remember.
