Cremation is fast becoming the preferred final disposition option for many nationwide. While most know what it involves, there is some confusion about cremation rules. At Ocean County Cremation Service, many clients have questions: Do I need a casket if I only want cremation? Let’s take a closer look at what is involved.

Is A Casket Necessary If You Only Want Cremation?

It is not necessary to have a casket if you opt for cremation. Many people choose not to use a casket and instead use a simple container to transport the body to the crematory. This container, often called an "alternative container," is placed in the cremation chamber and burned along with the body. It is worth noting that some crematoriums may require an alternative container for cremation in their facility.

Why Do You Need An Alternative Container For Cremation?

There are several reasons why a container is still necessary for cremation:

  • Cremation rules state that a combustible, leak-proof, and rigid container, known as an alternative container, is required for cremation. This container safeguards the body, upholds the dignity of the cremation process, and ensures safety.
  • The alternative container acts as a barrier to prevent the spread of disease and protects the crematory equipment from potential damage during the cremation process.
  • Per existing cremation rules, employees at crematoriums are legally mandated to handle human remains only when they are sealed in a container as a measure of compliance and safety.
  • As mentioned, the alternative casket or container must be constructed from materials that can withstand high temperatures without releasing harmful chemicals during cremation.

Types Of Caskets You Can Use During Cremation

There are generally two types of caskets commonly used for cremation:

  • Cremation Caskets- These caskets are specifically designed for cremation and are constructed from materials that can endure high temperatures. They are typically made of wood, cardboard, or pressed wood fibers and are usually simpler in design compared to traditional caskets.
  • Rental Caskets- Rental caskets are for viewing or funeral services before the cremation occurs and are often more ornamental. After the service, the body is transferred to a cremation casket for use in the actual cremation process.
