Is It Important to Have a Public Viewing Before the Funeral?

Many cultures and religions believe that a public viewing before the funeral is vital for the service. The viewing can be either public or private, and varies in length based on culture of the decease. For some it may be the day of the service, for others it may happen a few days before the service. However, the common ground for each is the viewing is the final chance for family and friends, to hold and talk to the deceased to say their goodbyes. In this article we will take a look at the different types of viewings and visitations and why they are important to the funeral service.

What is the Difference?

The two terms that will come up many times during this discussion is viewings and visitations. Although they both included the gathering of the families prior to the service, there are some fundamental differences. For a visitation, the body of the deceased is not traditionally present. Instead of having the body present, the family would place pictures and other memorabilia around the hall.

In the case of a viewing, it is a chance for the family and friends to see the physical body, where you can hold their hand and talk to them one last time. Traditionally viewings take place at the location of where the service will take place later on that day. In some cases there may even be a private viewing prior to the public one to allow the immediate family some private moments together before saying goodbye.

Why is a Viewing Important?

For some people, the thought of seeing their passed loved one is too difficult. However, it is important to remember about others in attendance at the service. In many instances, the death of a loved one is unforeseen and most people have not had a chance to say goodbye. By having a public viewing, you are giving everyone a chance to say their goodbyes and tell them how much they loved them. It is an important time for closure and remembrance and love. It will help everyone in attendance to have on chance to hold the deceased hand and tell him or her how much he or she loved him or her.
