Should Your Child Attend the Funeral?

Most parents want to shield their children from the not-so-pleasant realities of life as much as they can. They are the most averse to discussing death and funerals, fearful that they will scare their children. Many specialists and bereavement therapists say it isn’t a good idea to deny children this information.

The majority of people feel it is improper to bring kids below 12 years of age, to funerals, but this is primarily due to the disturbance they might create. We at Ocean County Cremation Center have put together this information, to help you decide what works best for you:

1. Children Have Some Understanding Of Death

Most believe death is a traumatizing part of life that children cannot comprehend. Experts are divided on the subject. Kids are capable of comprehending death and processing the unexpected loss in a safe manner with the proper guidance.

2. Attending A Funeral Will Speed The Healing Process

Children experience sadness and loss in the same way as adults do. Attending a funeral enables them to process their grief and say their final farewells. Parents should discuss this with their children to decide whether they are ready.

3. The Kids Are Too Young

Some kids are very young and can disrupt the event. It is important to honor the grieving family's feelings. If you feel they may not be open to the idea of children attending the funeral, its best to avoid it.

4. You Can Discuss It With Your Kids

Some children are mature enough to make their own choices. For instance, if your child is between the ages of 8 and 10, clarify what transpired and inquire. Many of them are okay with attending funerals, while others remain at home. It's prudent to honor their decision rather than attempting to impose your preferences on them.
