Helping Children with the Death of a Parent
Friday, November 13, 2020
It isn’t easy for anyone to deal with the loss of a parent and this can be particularly challenging for children. While life must go on even after you have lost a dear one, it can be tough for kids to understand this and manage their feelings. This is because they rely on their parents for many things.
Tips To Follow
We at Ocean County Cremation Service believe that kids need a lot of support from adults in their lives to recover from their loss, deal with their feelings, and remain healthy. Some tips to keep in view include:
- In most families, the parents become the main support system for a child and the latter look up to them for love, safety, and comfort. Parents are the ones who make sure that their kids are emotionally and physically healthy.
- If a child loses one parent, the other needs to take over all the responsibilities so that the child does not become impacted by the loss as much as they would. If both the parents have passed, other adults and immediate family members must step in to fulfill the role to some extent, during this difficult time.
- Always be straightforward while dealing with kids after a parent’s death. It’s crucial that you do not use terms such as – “your mom/dad is in a better place,” or “They have become a star.” Today, children are very perceptive and generally know what has occurred. However, they may not be strong enough to handle the news and that’s where family members need to help.
- When you are speaking with a child and explaining what has happened, you need to ensure the child understands that their loved one will not be returning.
- Listen to the child to understand what they are feeling and answer their questions willingly.
